I don't have the option of a custom avatar anymore. Is this permanent?

Yes. Custom avatars are now a donator perk.

Any donators with no forum pic. will be able to change it back tomorrow :) at the moment, it's broken but it will be fixed tomorrow.

I dislike it. Something that's generally free on every forum will be donator only.

I was a donator, then I was moved to some AllGoFree group which was deleted and now I'm without a group and  a profile avatar?  :'(
