We don't even have tree seeds yet though.
Palm trees and Nightshade when? :)

Then how would he know that the seeds didn't work on the plant pot?  ???

Tree seeds are obtainable from birds nests

He never said it was planting seeds that didn't work, could be filling a empty plant pot that is broken.
