how did they fuck up the rares, those rares would never be rare because of the amount of people hoarding em, did you really expect something that happened with rs3 (people pk'ing with rares because they're useless), huge amounts of people losing these rares and eventually ending up with only a small amount of rares in the economy, guess what, not going to happen.
and also they didn't "fuck up", the players had the choice and this is what 75%+ wanted :c

Because everyone has them, they are no longer rare. They're just cosmetic items that look good. Because everyone horded, demand when down and the prices dropped which further drops the value of the word "rare." In a sense of RuneScape, Rares are expected to be worth a lot and to be actually rare. They're not rare. Simple as that.

You can never truly know how many people are online due to bots but usually OSRS has 10,000+ people on at any given time. RS3 claims to have more but its rumored they inflate it, which is easy to believe with the shit game it's become.

SO, the playercount displayed on the rs website is totally faked, there's even 7622 players missing if you add up the playercount on rs3, oldschool.
The missing 7622 are users currently logged in on the rs3 site (From what i've heard, from other people)
