As you have may noticed, the forum look and feel has changed! I've just completed some very needed backend upgrades and moved the website onto a brand new server that is much faster than the old one. It also is running a newer operating system and has an SSD (solid state drive) as the main storage device, which should provide an additional speed boost.

As we move forward with more updates to the game, paying down our technical debt from the past is becoming a very important issue, and the sluggishness of the website was one of those factors that was irritating to both the developers and our users alike. We hope that by reducing these frictions, we can bring even more people into the RuneRebels community as we continue along this journey together.

Over the next couple of months we will be working on additional technical debt reducing updates along with new in game content. Part of these technical debt reductions will be improving the end user experience for playing RuneRebels, and we will be focusing on every aspect that a user goes through from when they first visit the website all the way up to logging into the game. There are many aspects of this that can be greatly improved, such as the current landing page, the cache download time, and so on.

In order to add some user facing changes to this update, we have given the forum a fresh coat of paint with a modern dark theme. If you miss the old theme (or want a lighter color), don't worry! Just click here to change your current theme.

News & Announcements / RuneRebels 2.3.7 Aurora Launched!

Hey everyone,

This update was mainly focused on bug fixes, engine improvements, and tool and infrastructure improvements. This update took a bit longer than usual to launch due to me being tied up with a FIRST robotics competition for a team that I was mentoring, which was a ton of fun! I try and encourage more young people to enter the world of technology, software engineering, and game design, so this is something that I love to do. Nonetheless, work on the game will continue, and we have lots and lots of issues in Gitlab to tackle. ;)






One of the things we've done in this update is fix the gate to the Blue Dragons area in the Taverly Dungeon.
To get there you will now need a Dusty Key, which can be obtained by talking to Velrak the explorer inside his jail cell.
The nearby Jailer has a set of Jail keys on him but he won't give them up without a fight!



 


   Added Velrak the explorer's dialogue
   Velrak the explorer now gives the Dusty Key required to access the Blue Dragons area
       


   Fixed South Fally Members Gate to open/close properly
Taverly Dungeon

   Fixed both gates that lead further into Taverly dungeon
   Made the Prison doors to the Cauldron of Thunder in Taverly Dungeon singleplayer doors
   Fixed the doors to the Jails in Taverly Dungeon
   Fixed the gate to the Blue Dragons area
   The gate no longer changes to a wooden door when opened
   A Dusty Key is now required to open the gate
     


   Corrected the poison formula and fixed a bug where poison would not affect Npcs
             


   Added a 'Created by default' checkbox to all Dynamic Parts in the AllGoFree Tools
   Added support to create DynamicGroundItems and DynamicObjects in the AllGoFree Tools

We are back with another update!
Although this is our smallest update so far, we've focused mainly on the new client.
There is still more we would like to add to it, but we will touch up on that in the future.
One of the major things we've accomplished during this update is that our Bug Report Master Flustered
went through and filed all the bug reports on the forums and we've organized them all into Gitlab milestones,
ensuring that all these bugs will actually get fixed instead of forgotten.
With each update we are continuing our momentum of development and updates to ensure steady progress is made,
but also slowly increasing the speed and capability of the development tools and processes as well.
On top of that, we've continued steady web development on the side.

RuneRebels 2.1

RuneRebels 2.1 is a minor update for content, but a major update for the game engine itself! Some of the most important changes are documented below.

Update Contents

Engine:
   - Integrated all changes in the Arctic Engine that was used for Adventure Guild.
   - Split the monolithic "AllGoFree" library off into "Core AllGoFree", a small lightweight library.
   - Split the API of the server into the "Blitz API" project that can be used by third party developers.
   - Updated the Netty networking library.
   - Clean built the engine, dependencies, and all plugins using the latest Java.
   - Completely redid the logic to developer worlds.


Login Server:
   - Added support for the "developerGroups" configuration flag.
   - Added support for the "bannedGroups" configuration flag.
   - Added support for developer worlds.


Commands:
   - Added the ::teamspeak (::ts) command to join the TeamSpeak server.
   - Added the ::discord (::ds) command to join the Discord chat.


RuneRebels:
   - Modified the login message to alert the community to the TeamSpeak and Discord servers.


Quests:
   - Added the ::listquests plugin to list all Quests currently loaded and active on the server.


All Plugins:
   - All plugins have been updated for compatibility with the Blitz API when used in combination with private APIs.


Ban Hammer:
   - Updated to work exclusively with the Blitz API and no private APIs.

Roadmap Update




Hello everyone! I just wanted to make this post to give a high level overview of the roadmap for the servers! This is still a work in progress plan, but it should give you guys a good sense of the direction that we want to take the games and how we plan to mitigate many of the issues that we have experienced in the past. I also want to formally announce that Bill, Petter, and Onur have returned to assist me in the development and administration of the games, and I am very excited to be working with them again! 8)



Accounts / Login Server
One of my main goals is to get all of the AllGoFree sites using the same user database. I would like to merge the logins for the WorldScape and RuneRebels forum accounts, so you have a single login across both. To be clear, this will not merge in game accounts or the forums themselves, it will just tie them both to the same username and password. This will require a few database tricks and possibly a page for people to link their two accounts into one, so I will keep you updated on this.

The added benefit of this is that the friends chat will be linked between the two games, and it should help us form a larger, stronger, and more well connected community. In addition, any other test game worlds or services we create will use these accounts. :)



Blitz Engine / API
The effort that I am currently putting all of my energy towards is the new Blitz API. This will allow other developers to make plugins for the engine, and also modify existing plugins once they have been converted to use the API. This is what I have been doing on the livestream if any of you have been watching!

This a major effort and requires changes to every plugin, and there are currently over 80 plugins for the engine. However, progress has been very quick, and once all of the plugins are compiling again I will spin up a developer world to make sure there are no major regressions in the game. If all goes well, we will start looking for additional developers to take on some of the plugins. For example, one person could be responsible for the Woodcutting and Firemaking plugins, and would be in charge of fixing bugs or adding missing features to those plugins. These developers would have access to the Blitz API as well as the plugin they would be working on.



Bug Hunters
This goes hand in hand with the last point. In addition to having people focused on specific areas of the game, we would like to assign "Bug Hunters" to work with these new developers on finding bugs in the game and reporting them in the proper manner. These individuals would have direct access to file issues on the plugin repositories, where the developers would then review them, as opposed to regular players which report bugs on the forums. They would also be responsible for scanning the forums and screening bug reports, and ensuring that real bugs have an issue created in Gitlab.



Community
Overall, the theme is that we would like to grow the community and bring everyone closer together, and give members more responsibility of working on and maintaining the game. I've learned that I don't have enough time to do everything myself, which resulted in the stagnation of the game. By opening things up more and finding excited, talented individuals to join the team, I believe we can make some of the best private servers on the planet.

I've just made a post over on the WorldScape Forums about a similar topic, so you may want to give that a read!

Where have you been?
Unfortunately, life got the best of me and I was unable to dedicate the required time to keep up on new content for the games. :-[ I recently graduated college and was running a home automation startup for some time as well as working on a mobile MMORPG called http://adventureguildgame.com/. This game actually uses the same server engine as RuneRebels, and many improvements were made during the development cycle of that game. All of these changes have now been merged back into RuneRebels, and while they don't offer any content changes, provide a much cleaner API for creating new content, added stability, and cleans out a of the old cruft that I created while in middle/high school!


What is the future of RuneRebels
I would definitely check out the WorldScape post for my thoughts, but I would like to basically take on the role that Moparscape had now that the website has been sold. I would also like to somehow combine the RuneRebels and WorldScape accounts to make things much simpler. This would allow things like PMing between the forums, the friends list working between the games, and so on. It would also be great to have a single account if different games/servers are ever launched.

However, in addition I would love to continue the effort of completing nearly full emulation of RuneScape 2, and may want to open up plugin development to the community. Let me know what you guys think!

The problem where the client loader would display a "NullPointerException" on launch has been fixed. It was due to the client not requesting the cache over HTTPS, so the client cache has been exposed over HTTP for now.

AllGoFree Downtime

Who?
As many of you probably noticed, all AllGoFree services were offline for the past few days. This was due to our lovely friends at Time Warner Cable, who decided to "quarantine" (turn off) the Internet at the location where the majority of services are hosted.

Why?
Time Warner turned off the Internet because we didn't have an @twc.com email address. I'm not kidding. They turned off our Internet to try and get us to register for an email address. Apparently this is a common thing.

Did they fix it?
No; at first, they didn't know how what was wrong. It took two days and many escalations to get a phone representative to finally tell us they blocked us. When he attempted to unblock us, it required a reboot of our modem, which then knocked out the home phone as well!

Then what?
It turns out that Time Warner had permanently blacklisted our modem, so we had to swap out our modem for a completely new one. This has finally gotten everything working again, after three days of terrible customer service for a problem that they caused.

What can we do?
If this downtime angered you, made you sad, or you even just noticed, please help us stop this type of behavior by ISPs. When I said on the phone that it shouldn't be legal for them to disable our service without notice and then give us the runaround about it, he said "actually we can, its in the contract".

These companies don't care one bit about their customers. If you have had to deal with AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner, Comcast, Cox, or any ISP or cellular provider on the phone, you know what I am talking about. Please visit the site below to try and save the Internet, so that new ideas have a chance at becoming great. Without things like net neutrality, AllGoFree wouldn't exist. Please help keep us alive!

I'm Back.





Hey everyone, it has been quiet a long time! I am finally back to putting lots of my time into AllGoFree, specifically the RSPS sections of it. I know that these projects have not gotten the attention that they deserve from me, and I am sorry. College and life in general have not made it easily to keep up on everything, and I've changed many aspects of my life in order to do what I want to do. I want to spend more time doing the things I enjoy, like working on RuneRebels and my other personal projects. Before, I had problems with lack of sleep due to roommates blasting music, not cleaning up after themselves, not showering, and so on. I was in an unhealthy relationship with my now ex-girlfriend, who took up a large amount of time. I am now single and living in an off campus apartment all to myself, and can finally focus on myself.

The update to the game that is going live now is a memorial to two AllGoFree staff members who recently lost their lives, Mod Wayne (Fhillip) and Maxmager. You can find the memories to them right outside of Lumbridge.
